How We Rank

Most “best survey sites” lists rank by sign-up bonus or total earning potential. Those rankings are misleading because they ignore the thing that matters most: how much you actually earn per hour of time invested.

A site paying $3 per survey sounds great until you spend 40 minutes qualifying for it. A site paying $0.50 per survey sounds terrible until you realize you complete five of them in the time it takes to fail one qualification screen elsewhere.

We rank by effective hourly rate - total earnings divided by total time spent, including time wasted on disqualifications, screening questions, and platform navigation.

The Full Rankings

1. Prolific - ~$9/hr effective | Verdict: 9/10

The undisputed leader in pay-per-hour. Prolific is an academic research platform that enforces a minimum pay of GBP 6/hour for all studies. In practice, most studies pay above the minimum.

Why it ranks #1: The enforced minimum pay floor means you cannot accidentally waste time on a $0.50 study. Study design is consistently high quality. The dispute resolution system protects against unfair rejections.

The catch: Study availability depends heavily on your demographics and fluctuates week to week. You need to actively monitor for new studies, as they fill within minutes.

Best for: Anyone who wants the highest return per minute of effort.

2. Paid Viewpoint - ~$5/hr effective | Verdict: 9/10

Zero disqualifications means zero wasted time. Your effective rate equals your actual rate - a distinction that most survey sites cannot match.

Why it ranks #2: The TraitScore system means earnings improve over months. While the per-survey pay is modest, the complete elimination of DQ time waste makes the effective hourly rate competitive with sites that advertise higher per-survey amounts.

The catch: PayPal-only cashout with a $15 minimum. Early earnings are deliberately low while your TraitScore builds. Not the right choice if you need immediate results.

Best for: Patient earners who want a set-and-forget daily routine with zero frustration.

3. Freecash - ~$5/hr effective | Verdict: 7/10

Primarily offer walls, not surveys, but the effective hourly rate is competitive when you focus on high-value quick offers and skip the grinding game-level tasks.

Why it ranks #3: The best free trial and quick-install offers pay $5-$15 for 5-10 minutes. Crypto cashout (Bitcoin, Litecoin) is unique. Fast processing with many same-day payouts.

The catch: Not a traditional survey site - most earnings come from app installs and offer completions. Offers sometimes fail to credit, requiring support tickets. Newer company (2019) with less track record.

Best for: Gamers, crypto-curious earners, and users who want variety beyond surveys.

4. Branded Surveys - ~$4/hr effective (Gold tier) | Verdict: 7/10

The loyalty tier system rewards persistence. At Gold tier, the survey matching improves noticeably and focus group invitations add significant value.

Why it ranks #4: Gold tier members access focus groups paying $25-$100+ per session. Daily challenges add bonus earnings. The effective hourly rate at Gold is genuinely competitive.

The catch: Bronze tier (your first 4-6 weeks) is a frustrating experience with high DQ rates and limited inventory. You have to invest time before the platform starts performing well.

Best for: Committed users who will push through the tier progression and value focus group opportunities.

5. Swagbucks - ~$3/hr effective | Verdict: 7/10

The most well-known name in online rewards, but not the highest earner. Swagbucks’ real strength is its cashback shopping feature, not its surveys.

Why it ranks #5: Massive survey inventory means consistent availability. The $5 minimum gets you paid fast. The shopping cashback portal is a genuine value-add that competes with Rakuten.

The catch: 30-50% disqualification rates on surveys. Account deactivation risk. Points system obscures real dollar values.

Best for: Shoppers who will use the cashback feature alongside occasional surveys.

6. Survey Junkie - ~$3/hr effective | Verdict: 6/10

Functional, simple, and survey-focused. The FTC settlement over data practices and standard-issue DQ rates keep it out of the top tier.

Why it ranks #6: Clean interface, straightforward points system, and bank transfer payout option. Gets the basics right without unnecessary complexity.

The catch: $7.8M FTC settlement for undisclosed data collection via browser extension. DQ rates of 30-40%. Avoid the Pulse extension.

Best for: Users who want simplicity and bank transfer payouts. Use the website only, skip the extension.

7. Ipsos i-Say - ~$2/hr effective | Verdict: 6/10

Backed by a $2B+ global research firm but delivering a below-average user experience. Corporate legitimacy does not compensate for one of the highest DQ rates in the industry.

Why it ranks #7: Available in 40+ countries (best international reach). Visa prepaid card payout option. Loyalty milestone bonuses. Unquestionable corporate credibility.

The catch: 50-60% disqualification rate. Effective hourly rate below $2 after DQ time waste. Dated interface.

Best for: International users without access to US-centric platforms. Secondary panel for US users.

8. InboxDollars - ~$2/hr effective | Verdict: 6/10

The $30 minimum payout is the highest in the industry and actively works against casual users. Same corporate parent as Swagbucks but with fewer advantages.

Why it ranks #8: Real dollar display (not points) is a genuine transparency benefit. 25+ year operating history. Multiple payout methods.

The catch: $30 minimum payout threshold. Low-value activities (emails at $0.02, videos at pennies) are designed to keep you engaged, not to pay you. Same account deactivation risks as Swagbucks.

Best for: Only if you specifically want dollar-value display and already use Swagbucks. For most users, Swagbucks is the better Prodege option.

The Optimal Stack

If you are starting from zero, here is our recommended setup:

  1. Paid Viewpoint as your daily driver (5-10 min/day, zero frustration)
  2. Prolific for high-value studies (check 2-3 times daily)
  3. Branded Surveys or Swagbucks for volume
  4. Respondent as a passive lottery ticket (apply when studies match, expect nothing)

This combination targets $75-$200/month with roughly 30-45 minutes of daily effort.
